From the Archives: Colin Wanker Interview

on Thu Jun 08, 2017 12:17 am
Here's an interview with The Guvnor from FourFourTwo about ten years ago, prior to Sheffield United being promoted to the Premiership. It's an interesting read and it seems funny that they hint about the end of his career and yet, 10 years on, he's still going strong!

I think he's mellowed since then, although he is still pretty spiky. I don't think he's ever completely got over the upset stemming from the belief that in 2006 he thought he had a job for life with Sheff Utd, then in 2007 he had to walk away from the club after losing a lot of support when they were relegated after West Ham beat Man Utd in the last game of the season.

Yes, I remember there was quite a bit of fallout from that - an apology from Alex Ferguson for starters followed by some serious questions and charges over the Mascherano / Tevez deal.

I think it was typically fudged though wasn't it? West Ham didn't receive a points deduction which would have relegated them, but instead had to pay Sheff Utd a fee?

Yes, something like that but it came back full circle when the same thing happened a few years later with the QPR - Faurlin registration fiasco (while Warnock was in charge). They weren't docked points on the basis that "they acted in good faith" despite failing to provide the FA with requested documents. That was something that at the time could've benefited City as had they been docked points they could've gone up automatically, as it was, they weren't and City ballsed up their last two games of the season and ended up finishing 4th anyways. Typical fucking City.

Article on that here:
